MDMThe history of the professional theatre in Most started to be re- corded on 30 September 1911, when an art-nouveau building, built under a project of the Vienna architect Alexander Graf, was ceremoni- ally opened here. At first the programme of the Most stage was German, consisting mostly of opera and light opera performances. However, after the emergence of the indepen dent Czechoslovak Republic, regular Czech ensembles also started to appear in Most. This practice lasted until the oc- cupation of the boarder-land by German troops in October 1938. After the end of the World War II – in May and June 1945 – the operation of the Most theatre was gradually restored, and a professional ensemble with a repertoire of plays and grand opera was established by the Central Union Council here. After rather complicate organizational peripetia a solely dramatic ensemble was constituted in Most, and the theatre’s name was Divadlo pracujících (The Workers’ theatre). The historic building of the Most theatre served to its purpose until the end of 1979, when the ensemble left it, functioning for almost six years in temporary conditions of the Máj cultural centre in new Most. In October 1982 the vacated building, in the same way as the whole old town of Most, was liquidated.

MDMIn November 1985 a new theatre building, designed by the architect Ivo Klimeš of Ostrava, was opened in Most. Its auditorium can hold five hundred spectators, and the stage is equipped with modern stage technology and technique. In 1987, in addition to the stage of plays, an ensemble of the Theatre of Diversity was created, the performance of which is meant above all for children and the youth. At present, the Municipal theatre in Most can meet the interest of a wide community of spectators on a high professional level, and inseparably belongs to the social and cultural life of the town and the whole region.
